The Political Economy of Reparations

Priya Lukka's presentation critically analyzes contemporary struggles for reparations, arguing that the prevailing Western capitalist model inherently perpetuates inequality, and argues for a fundamental shift in approach. She posits that genuine reparations require political and structural change to effectively address poverty and exclusion rooted in existing economic policies. Lukka underscores the crucial role of community-owned and community-led processes, dialogue, emphasizing truth-telling from victims' perspectives. She critiques conventional reparations efforts for their failure to dismantle systemic exclusion and contends that while human rights laws are vital, they fall short of delivering adequate compensation within a system that inherently produces harm. Reparations should include restitution, rehabilitation and guarantees of non repetition.
