One danger facing mass movements is the ‘NGO-isation’ of the resistance. It would be easy to misrepresent what I am about to say as a criticism of all NGOs. That would be untrue. Amidst the murky waters of bogus NGOs set up to siphon off grant money or as a tool for tax evasion (in states such as Bihar, they are given as dowries), there are, of course, NGOs that carry out valuable work. But it is important to shift our focus away from the positive work carried out by certain individual NGOs and reflect on the phenomenon of NGOs within a broader political context.
