Consider this. If someone died of tuberculosis in the 18th century, would this be considered violence? The answer is no, because back then death would not have been avoidable. Today it can be defined as violence because people are dying of TB at a time when modern medicine can treat and prevent death from tuberculosis, but only for some. This is just one example of structural violence provided by Dr Tonya Haynes in her teach-in on the topic. Learn more about structural violence, what it is, why it happens, and why it matters to you and your community inhis insightful video session. “What is Structural Violence?” took place on the 1st of March 2023 and was taught by Professor Tonya Haynes.
